Weeknotes: 2024, Weeks 51–52

I closed down the working year with a two day week. I’ve been on everyday-is-Sunday holiday mode since Wednesday the 18th.

Christmas came and went. It was a good holiday spent with our children and my parents. We went light on the gifts this year, opting for a family experience in the upcoming new year.

We’ve settled into some traditions around the holiday.

I accidentally made 3x more pizza dough than what I needed. So we’ve had a lot of pizza. The kids and I made personal pizzas, and one communal desert pizza of their design.

We finished all seasons of Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking. Other than those two shows for Emily and me, we’ve been watching a bunch of Christmas movies.

I’ve started consuming a little bit of alcohol again. Similar to making pizza and smoking meat, I like the art of creating a craft cocktail for friends to enjoy. And nothing compares to pairing pizza with a cold, hoppy beer.

I may abstain again in the future. I’m definitely aware of the impact on sleep, and I really value sleep.

I’ve been hacking on this website quite a bit during the break. I’ve left the world of static site generators and am running my own application on my own hardware.

kamal is a pretty nice piece of kit. Learning just enough Docker to feel confident running my own server has been some rewarding skills acquisition.

This has created a fractal effort of digital house cleaning. Cleaning up DNS. Archiving old Github projects. Organizing textfiles. I stumbled upon some abandoned habits that I’d like to re-institute.

This concludes an entire year of weeknotes. I’ll decide if I’m going to keep up the practice up in the new year, next week.
